Russian vocabulary: привычка, привыкнуть


  Today we will look at Russian words describing habits and doing things one is used to.

привычка - custom, habit, wont, mannerism
привыкнуть - to get used to, to become accustomed to
отвыкнуть - to get out of the habit of, to become disaccustomed
привычный - habitual, customary, accustomed
привычно - habitually
непривычный - unusual, unfamiliar, uncustomary
вредная (дурная) привычка - “harmful habit”, bad, obsessive habit (such as smoking or biting your fingernails)

Я привык(ла) гулять с собакой по вечерам. - I'm used to walking my dog in the evening.
Он привык просыпаться рано. - He's used to waking up early. (More sleep-related vocabulary here.)
Она привыкла обедать в полдень. - She is used to having lunch at noon.
Живя в городе, он совсем отвык от свежего воздуха. - Living in the city, he became completely disaccustomed to fresh air.
Она отвыкла от зарядки. - She is no longer used to doing gym.
Это так непривычно! - This is so unusual!
Говорят, что на формирование новой привычки нужно три недели. - They say it takes three weeks to form a new habit.
